Rugs
|
The first to use rugs were nomadic tribes. The art of rugs manufacture exists for 2.5 thousands years. In Turkey and Persia women wove the rugs and their houses were like workshops with the spindle in the centre. The secrets of rug craft and patterns passed from mother to daughter.
The patterns of the ancient rugs were connected with their function.
They were like hictoric records, performed symbolically. The colour of the rugs had some meaning as well. So in Turkish rugs prevailed red colour- the symbol of prosperity; green- the symbol of paradise;blue- the sign of nobleness; yellow- the opposition to bad luck and black - the solving of problems.
The most ancient rug dates back to IV A.C and was found in the tomb of Skithian chief. Though the rug was under the ice for 2.5 thousand years, it turned to be undamaged.
The first rugs had their way to Europe thanks to knights who brought them from crusades.
The acquaintance of Europeans with this art and already discovered technique of tapestry production in Spain , led to the active decoration of Middle Ages dwelling with rugs. Rugs were used as movable walls which changed sizes and proportions of the castle halls. The rug was the means of space transformation, the way to make the empty room comfortable and homelike. It preserved warmth and decorated the walls. So the routine of nomadic tribes played the decisive role.
