Navajo Rugs

Land, plants, skies, and their colors inspired weavers of Navajo rugs for their superb quality rugs.
Navajo rugs feature specific locations observed by weavers at different places of reservation. However the designs have no meaning and they are not symbolic. Modern designs differ from the old ones, they are no longer standard as during the time when traders controlled the process of weaving.

Navajo rugs are made from pure wool. Some cotton threads are added for the rugs which are sold for tourists. Many Navajo rugs have names, for example Tree of Life from Pendleton manufacturer. The Pendleton rugs are machine made but of high quality and it’s recognized by Indian communities.

Two grey Hills is a rug in natural colors featuring male Navajo weaver.
The production of Navajo rugs takes a lot of time. To prepare and dye the wool is half of the job. The production of the rug takes 350 hours including preparation of wool.

The known masters of Navajo rugs are Benson Harwood and Ella Myers. Ella Myers introduces a nice-looking rug for classroom featuring a plant used as a dye.
Navajo rugs are strong and durable due to hand spinning of yarn.
