Tiger Rugs

Tiger rugs are animal print rugs with the tiger or tiger marking on it. The rug motif has the base of Asian tiger which means Tibetan culture. In the Tibetan culture Tiger means grace and mightyness. The original tiger rugs originate to the time of 600 years ago. The explanation for this Tibetan design may be understood as whimsical folk art for foreign buyer but actually the underlying sense is the fear of large predator.

So the fears were transformed into such kind of art.Tibetan rug wool knotting technique is the base of tiger rug. If you feel the real rural tiger rugs, you'll find it coarse.

The main Oriental rug production areas were urban Shigatse and Lhasa centres.
The antique Tibetan Tiger rugs differentiate from modern one by its color and shadings. The first one has natural beige,saffron-orange or blues while the modern one has more green or blue tones.
The common design for many of original tiger rugs is fed up tiger with the fish in the mouth.

So the weaver metaphorically shows that the tiger is not dangerous to humans now.
